Have you noticed your toenail has become a yellowish green colour and you don’t know why?
Let us explain why you should pay a little more attention, when relaxing during your pedicure.
At least once a day we see a new pedicure client who presents with existing polish, who are completely oblivious to the serious condition lurking below.
One of the most common nail diseases associated with pedicures is the pseudomonas bacteria.
It sounds scary and looks REALLY ugly when left untreated and ignored but we want you to know how to prevent it from happening to you.
Pseudomonas develop when water is trapped between the nail bed and the nail plate, it thrives in low oxygenated areas and when the toenail is covered with polish it prevents the sunlight from drying the nail.

So how do you prevent Pseudomonas developing?
Every single one of us has kicked our toe before, we say a few expletive words, hop around a little and then forget about it right…..
Well, what you need to be really mindful of is how long are your toenails and did you just seperate the nail from the nail bed?
As this is how water gets trapped.
Trauma causes the nail bed to lift from the nail plate which is why it is important you keep your nails shortened.
Trauma can also be cause by shoes that do not fit properly or are too tight, nails that are too long, items being dropped on them, or kicking them.
So how do you treat a Pseudomonas?
The best way to treat a severe pseudomonas is to remove all of the nail that has lifted and allow the nail to grow and reattach.
This however can look ugly and is often better to seek treatment options prior to the pseudomonas taking hold.
If caught early you may be able to purchase the Antifungal treatment for $24.95 from the salon and apply it daily to remove the moisture that has been trapped.
It is recommended that the nail is not painted for at least 7 days of initial treatment to ensure effective use of the treatment however in certain circumstances the nail can be polished.

Prevention is always better than treatment so please ensure you are looking after your feet with regular maintenance appointments and always take a look at your toes when colour has been removed to ensure your technician isn’t just painting over what can make you incredibly sick if left untreated.
