Big Changes at Sassy Minx:
Big changes are happening behind the scenes at Sassy Minx. Carly shares why she’s stepping back, who’s stepping up, and what it means for your salon experience.
Let’s be real, there’s nothing quite like the feeling of walking out of the salon with a fresh set of nails. You feel polished, powerful, and ready to take on the world (or at least your inbox). But fast forward a few days, and suddenly your once flawless manicure is chipped, dull, or lifting at the edges. Sound familiar?
You’re not alone. We’ve all been there especially our lovely client, Jess from Torquay. Jess is a busy mum of two, a part-time yoga instructor, and a full-time legend. She came into Sassy Minx one Friday afternoon, frazzled and frustrated. “I love getting my nails done,” she sighed, “but they never last more than a few days. I don’t have time to come in every week!”
We hear you, Jess. And we’ve got you.
At Sassy Minx, we believe your nails should work as hard as you do, without compromising on style. Whether you’re juggling kids, clients, or cocktails, your manicure should stay flawless for as long as possible. So today, we’re spilling all our salon secrets on how to make your manicure last longer, straight from our Hervey Bay nail experts.
It Starts with the Prep: Clean Nails, Clean Slate
One of the biggest mistakes people make is underestimating the power of proper nail prep. Think of it like painting a wall, if the surface isn’t clean and smooth, the paint won’t stick. The same goes for your nails.
At Sassy Minx, we start every manicure with a thorough cleanse using a gentle, pH-balanced nail cleanser. We remove oils, residue, and any lingering polish. Then we gently push back the cuticles (never cut them—more on that later), lightly buff the nail surface, and shape the nails to perfection.
If you’re doing your nails at home, make sure you’re not skipping this step. Use a non-acetone remover to clean the nail plate, and avoid hand creams or oils before applying polish, they can create a barrier that prevents adhesion.
Choose the Right Products (Because Not All Polish Is Created Equal)
Let’s talk polish. We love a good chemist find as much as the next gal, but when it comes to long lasting results, quality matters. At Sassy Minx, we use premium gel and hybrid polishes that are designed to last up to three weeks without chipping or fading.
Jess had been using regular polish at home, and while it looked great on day one, it didn’t stand a chance against her daily routine. We introduced her to our Flexigel Gel Biab Nail system, a vegan, cruelty-free gel that’s kind to your nails and tough on wear and tear. The result? A manicure that lasted her through school runs, yoga classes, and even a weekend camping trip.
If you’re in Hervey Bay and looking for long lasting nails, investing in a professional gel manicure is a game-changer. And if you prefer DIY, look for long-wear formulas and always use a base and top coat.
Don’t Skip the Top Coat (Seriously, Don’t)
We can’t stress this enough: your top coat is your manicure’s bodyguard. It seals in colour, adds shine, and protects against chips. Reapplying a clear top coat every few days can dramatically extend the life of your manicure.
At Sassy Minx, we finish every service with a high-gloss, chip-resistant top coat that cures under LED light for maximum durability. For clients like Jess, who are constantly on the go, you can also use a quick-dry top coat for at-home touch-ups.
Be Kind to Your Hands (Your Nails Will Thank You)
Your nails are not tools. Repeat after us: “I will not use my nails to open cans, peel off stickers, or scrape off price tags.” These little habits can wreak havoc on your manicure.
We encouraged Jess to keep a small pair of scissors or a keychain multitool in her bag for those moments when she’d usually just use her nails. It made a huge difference.
Wearing gloves while doing dishes or gardening is another simple but powerful way to protect your manicure. Queensland’s salty air and sun are beautiful, but they can be drying, so don’t forget to moisturise your hands and cuticles daily.
Hydration Is Key (Inside and Out)
Healthy nails start from within. Staying hydrated helps your nails stay strong and flexible, which means they’re less likely to break or peel. Jess started carrying a reusable water bottle and noticed not only her nails improving, but her skin and energy levels too.
Externally, we recommend using a cuticle oil daily. Our go-to at Sassy Minx is a nourishing blend of jojoba, vitamin E, and essential oils. It keeps the nail bed hydrated and promotes healthy growth. Plus, it smells divine.
Avoid Picking and Peeling (We See You!)
We get it peeling off gel polish can be oddly satisfying. But trust us, it’s doing more harm than good. When you peel off polish, you’re also removing layers of your natural nail, leaving them weak and prone to breakage.
Jess admitted she was guilty of this, especially when she was stressed. We taught her how to safely remove gel polish at home using acetone wraps and a gentle file. Better yet, she now pops into our Hervey Bay salon for a professional soak-off or refresh. It’s quick, relaxing, and way better for your nails.
Timing Matters: Don’t Rush the Drying Process
If you’re using regular polish, patience is your best friend. Even if your nails feel dry to the touch, they can still smudge or dent if you’re not careful. Give your manicure at least 20–30 minutes to fully set, and avoid hot water or heavy tasks for a few hours.
Gel polish, on the other hand, cures instantly under LED light, which is why it’s such a popular choice for busy women like Jess. No smudges, no waiting, just flawless nails that are ready to go.
Maintenance Between Appointments
To keep your manicure looking fresh between salon visits, we recommend a few simple habits:
– Apply cuticle oil daily
– File any snags immediately to prevent peeling
– Avoid harsh chemicals and wear gloves when cleaning
– Stop using your nails as tools
Jess now keeps a mini nail kit in her handbag with a file & cuticle oil. It’s her secret weapon for keeping her nails looking salon-fresh, even on the busiest days.
When It’s Time to Refresh
Even the best manicure won’t last forever. We recommend booking your next appointment every 3-4 weeks, depending on your nail growth and lifestyle. At Sassy Minx, we offer a range of services—from classic gel to BIAB (Builder in a Bottle) and nail art that can be tailored to your needs.
Jess now books her appointments in advance and treats them as her “me time.” It’s not just about nails, it’s about self-care, confidence, and feeling like the best version of yourself.
